Micro-needling
Micro-needling or Collagen Induction Therapy, CIT
Micro-needling in aesthetics was developed in 1905 by Dr. Ernst Kronomayer, a dermatologist who used the needling technique to break up scar, birthmarks, and hyperpigmentation in his practice. In the ’50s- Dr. Kurtin, a noted NYC dermatologist rediscovered Dr. Kronomayer’s research and developed the “needled roller”. He teamed up with Alexis Carrell, scientist and Noble Peace Prize winner for his pioneering work in aging, and their research and treatments laid the ground work for modern-day micro-needling. Ancient needling however dates back to 100 BC, China where acupuncture originated.
As we currently seek more natural solutions to aging, fine lines and scar, micro-needling has become a popular and scientifically backed treatment that focuses on our bodies own “power” to heal itself. Micro-needling is safe for all skin types. In the state of California, medical micro-needling must be done in a clinical environment by a nurse or physician.
The process of puncturing the skin stimulates a healing response and the body responds by producing natural collagen. Needling with a derma roller has many advantages over other skin therapies and rejuvenation processes. The most evident is that it does not remove the outer layer of the epidermis, as is the case with most laser therapies and chemical peels. The body’s protective layer remains intact which reduces the possibility of infection or side effects. The growth factors released through CIT results in regenerative healing and healthy collagen formation in the dermis while growth factors released from the epidermis produce collagen from the top down.
