Collagen and Anti-Aging

Collagen, what is it, and why it matters.

In the previous blog, Skin Anatomy, we learned that internal oral fluids and external fluids such as HA Serum hydrate the dermis and epidermis. A hydrated dermis is critical to collagen and skin cell production. Collagen gives the skin strength and elasticity while providing plump and structure. Collagen cells are the glue that holds skin and body together. Our bodies make natural collagen called endogenous collagen while exogenous collagen comes from cow, pig, or sheep and is used in medical and cosmetic products. With age, the body produces less collagen and for women, there is a dramatic reduction of collagen synthesis after menopause.

Causes of collagen loss:

  • High sugar diets cause glycation, a process in which blood sugar attacks and attaches to collagen making it dry, brittle, and weak.

  • Smoking, the chemicals in tobacco destroy collagen, fibrin and reduce blood flow to the skins’ surface preventing nutrient delivery.

  • Direct sunlight, UVA rays specifically destroy collagen in the dermis resulting in wrinkles.

Eat a healthy diet with foods rich in:

  • Proline, the protein that stabilizes collagen, is found in egg whites, meat, cheese, soy, and cabbage.

  • Anthocyanins, found in blackberries, blueberries, cherries, and raspberries, protect against UVA damage and reduce inflammation in the skin.

  • Vitamin C, found in oranges, strawberries, peppers, and broccoli. Vitamin C is the catalyst in the reaction that forms collagen. Without vitamin C collagen cannot be made.

  • Copper, found in shellfish, nuts, red meat and Dermaplus Medical HA serum. Copper firms and promotes collagen production.

  • Beta carotene, found in red/orange fruits and vegetables including carrots, peas, spinach, squash, and sweet potatoes. Beta carotene converts to vitamin A and vitamin A stimulates collagen formation.
